Cisco on June 15 unveiled a new series of Catalyst industrial edge routers and IoT gateway series, specially made for industrial environments that support Wi-Fi 6, 4G LTE, 5G, private networks, and public safety. Cisco said that the new portfolio of three routers and an IoT gateway series will maximize the enterprise network and will extend the SD-WAN to the edge. This will enable businesses to see the valuable data to the power-connected operations instead of edge environments that process in isolation.
The vendor further said that the routers would connect and power new use cases that have been occurring in new places as a consequence of digital transformation along with connected utility substations and transportation. The Catalyst Industrial Routers are also modular, which will help customers to swap out the CPU or any Batteries in the field while extending the time of the device life.
The new Cisco Catalyst 5G router well supports the Cisco Catalyst IR1101, which is an integrated service router for tough IoT environments. These routers are designed on the basis of the Cisco IOS XE operating system, according to Cisco. The edge devices and environments are most of the time managed in isolation. Meanwhile, each use case, such as point-to-sale kiosks or remote piece equipment connection, can have several requirements than the actual need of the enterprise campus or branch. This leads to fragmented network architecture, as per the San Jose, California-based Cisco.
Cisco said that the unified architecture embedded inside the devices could largely benefit in simplifying management and providing security for IT and for the operation teams. The new series of Cisco IoT Gateways for indoor and Outdoor connectivity is comprised of Cisco’s IoT operations Dashboard that provides easy deployment in the cloud-based framework.
In a statement, the VP and GM of Cisco IoT, Vikash Butaney, said that the routers provide enterprise-grade security and will support the Cisco Cyber Vision to offer visibility at the level of an industrial asset. It also supports SD-WAN to connect users, remote or mobile assets reliably, devices, securely, as well as cost-effectively across a wide range of WAN transport links. He further added that the customers need their hardware to be in action for 7 to 10 years in the operational environments. Such modularity eradicates a rip and replaces cycle to leverage 5G technology and anything that comes in the future.
Landis+Gyr, a Switzerland-based company that serves software and connected meters to utility companies, praised Cisco for supporting Wi-SUN or Wireless Smart Utility Network. The firm partnered with Cisco to provide true inter-operability solutions for utility companies and requires to be able to interchange hundreds and thousands of devices, said the senior VP of technologies at Landis+Gyr, Tim Weidenbach.
He said in a statement that as an essential part of supporting the critical infrastructure, utilities need networking products with long life, enables open standards to protect vendor lock-in, and strengthening end-to-end security with strong integration into their organization systems. Cisco is bringing a reliable and future-proof platform for their utility customers’ demand.
The new Cisco Catalyst for IoT portfolio will become available in June, as per the San Jose, California-based tech giant.
