Big shopping malls and other public sectors produce gallons of wastewater every day which can be recycled within the very unit with the use of IoT devices. The report shows the Orion mall, Bangalore recycled 3.8 lakh liters water every day with the use of Internet of Things (IoT)- based technology. The most interesting thing is that IoT application has been developed by a start-up.
The mall is spread over 8.2 lakh sq. Ft houses around 200 commercial units. The mall utilizes 4 lakh liters of water daily among which 3.8 liters get recycled. The recycled water is used to cool the towers and in the air conditioning system. This technology has divided everyday water consumption.
Wastewater can be recycled with smart technologies. A start-up named- Greenvironment Innovation & Marketing India Pvt Ltd, founded by alumni of IIT Madras has developed that IoT application that can recycle huge water produced by the Orion Mall every day. Now every other public sector is looking forward to installing such technology. The company also provides real-time monitoring of wastewater, and also provide troubleshooting whenever requires, to put it simply, the support is also provided by them.
The Times View says “Every drop of water counts. And if the Internet of Things helps save lots of them, it should be used extensively. There’s a dire need to conserve this precious resource on a war footing. While many people are aware of this pressing problem, not too many of them are doing something actively about it. Technology has come to the rescue in many areas, and IoT has a lot to offer here. If it can chip in to assist those actively involved in conservation and rationalized use of water, more organizations and apartments should tap it. Every bit counts in this exercise’’
Varun Shridharan, the CEO of Greenvironment India, says malls have started adopting wastewater utilization techniques from 2017, but main lookout was in the management system. The modern technology alerts you if oil content in your water goes beyond the safe limit through the IoT embedded sensors that are used in different stages of the application. The oil content in the wastewater comes from the food court. An oil skimmer can be used to treat the wastewater that contains oil. He also added- the real-time monitoring system comprised of real-time data collection technique which analyses data obtained through the data exchange. The IoT technology allows collecting data involving quality, flow, energy consumption and data from other important monitoring parameters. The system also exchanges knowledge from one remote control center to many local operators at the same time.
The recycled water is used to cool tower, in the air conditioners, in flushing system, in gardening, etc. The modern technological intervention makes waste water quality much better.
