According to Zakir Durumeric, the smart appliances, Wi-Fi Printer, connected TV, ISP router might be overtaken by the diabolical botnets. Moreover, these botnets seek for staging the next stage of worldwide DDoS attack. Avast Software and Stanford University's top researchers did ponder at the increasing risks that come with IoT consumer security devices.
By the looks of it, the researchers are going to put their findings forward at the Security USENIX Symposium from the 14th to 16th of August 2019. Moreover, the symposium is all set to take place in the heart of Silicon Valley.
A robust team of researchers did conduct a massive number of antivirus scans of around 83 million Internet of Things devices from about 16 million households across the world. The findings suggest that the security posture of most of the conventional devices present in homes can be extremely alarming.
The devices come from a wide array of collectivity such as routers, computers, mobile devices, game consoles, fitness trackers, external storage, home automation, work appliances, surveillance cameras, connected cars among others. Even the small connected devices such as the smart light bulbs are prone to be affected by a botnet.
Furthermore, the research also found out that a third of the homes around the globe at least have a single IoT device. IoT adoption is very much prevalent across America. Most of the houses incorporate at least one conventional IoT device. On the other hand, the quarter of homes also have around three or more devices.
The inescapable truth is that most of the consumers are well aware of the IoT devices. By the looks of it, the accretion of the IoT devices is easy to be hackers. Since the inception of Mirai botnet in the year 2016, the DDoS attack increases. The researchers also reminded the people that the massive botnet attack since the beginning of the Internet itself took place on the 21st of October, 2016.
