The security or CCTV cameras that are connected to the Internet 24/7 currently account for almost half of the total IoT devices around the world. The hackers often compromise these security devices as businesses and companies are adding these IoT powered devices to their dedicated networks.
SAM Seamless Network, a notable cybersecurity company, has reportedly found that the security camera are usually targeted by hackers. Additionally, these IoT devices represent around 47 percent of devices, which are both vulnerable and installed in dedicated networks.
Recent data also states that the average US household constitutes 17 percent of the total smart devices. On the other hand, in Europe, the average smart devices that are connected to the network are about 14 percent.
Almost all the electronic appliances these days are curated with the fundamental values of IoT such as smart TVs, smartphones, computers, among others. Moreover, It is the connected-security cameras that are vulnerable.
Most of the attacks conducted by the hackers usually bypass the security of the affordable IP cameras, as the low-cost security cameras come with a similar blueprint. And this is the reason if a single vulnerability is found on one of the security cameras, then it is easier to take control of them all.
According to Chief Product Architect at SAM, Omri Mallis, the primary targets of the hackers are the security cameras. These connected cameras don't come with cutting-edge design or security protocols. The cameras with better security cost a lot of money, and this is the reason why businesses and people invest in the cheaper variants.
After the connected cameras, the storage devices which are connected to the networks and the smart hubs are the most vulnerable IoT devices, according to the research. The connected storage devices and smart hubs account for 12% and 15% of the most hackable devices. Moreover, Smart TVs, Printers, IP Phones are also the devices which usually fall victim of the hacking.
