Sony has made plans to seize the future business opportunities in the field of smart automotive as well as the Internet of Things. The company is bringing in new-age engineers who are going to focus on the technologies of the chip that supports them.
Sony, the Japanese tech giant also said that the 40 percent of the new engineers which the company is going to hire in the next couple of years are going to be allocated with the chip technologies which also include research and development of image sensor.
Sony intends to hire around 320 engineers in the years 2019 and 2020. The figure for hiring are accounted for the Japanese staff, and they are not related to the skilled team which are going to be hired abroad. Nevertheless, the increase in hiring the 250 engineers in the year 2018 might help the firm is heading towards a substantially profitable image sensing technologies.
Based on the reports by Reuters, the image sensors represent 15 percent of the current year profit of the Japanese company. The estimated benefits have been recently cut because of the weakening global demand for smartphones.
This move is going to many sony dive in the competitive market all over again. There is a dire need for the company to diversify it’s beyond the smartphone technologies and to seek new revenue streams.
It is very much unclear when the image sensors and smartphone industry are going to retain profitability in the future; nevertheless, by investing the resources heavily into the image sensors, Sony can oversee that the image sensors are used in all of its electronic devices. There is a highly likely chance that sony is going to take advantage of IoT, mobile as well as automotive markets which are getting encouragement to roll out 5G as well as AI technologies in the near future.
Yole Development suggests that the market of the image sensor is going to be worth $23.2 billion by the year 2023.
