Evnex, a leading EV charging company, is all set to roll out charging stations in Aotearoa’s rural areas. Spart IoT’s expansion of the IoT network will make this possible. Spart has recently upgraded about 263 rural connectivity with CAT-M1 IoT modems. It is expected to increase coverage of IoT networks in the rural parts of New Zealand, which will enable Evnex to monitor and connect EV chargers in real-time.
According to Ed Harvey, the CEO of Evnex, the expansion of IoT network coverage will help in reducing the number of barriers for rural people with EVs. It will enable the nation to move closer to a low-carbon economy. Harvey further added that by moving towards a more resilient and smarter network, the EV charging companies could offer more incentive to set up chargers in different locations that have proper IoT network coverage. It is mainly due to the ability to effectively collect, evaluate, and analyze the data more accurately.
The CEO of Evnex also stated that collecting information relating to the usage patterns from public or residential charging data would enable Evnex to collaborate with energy companies in order to ensure better management of load on the existing electricity network. Harvey believes that it is essential to ensure sustainable consumption of energy in the region. The bi-directional data connection will help in stopping or slowing down charging when the demand of the network is very high. This will help in avoiding excess transmission costs or excessive generations. It can even lower the chances of blackouts.
The CAT-M1 modems are known to last longer in comparison to the previous 3G and 2G models. Increased efficiency in a number of areas is good news for EV owners.
According to Tony Agar, the Spark IoT lead, smart EV technologies, and IoT networks are coming together in order to enable the power grid to operate and function at peak performance. He further added that the increase in IoT coverage would enable the energy and EV charging companies to collect more data from residential and public chargers. It will allow the companies to gain more insights into when and where to distribute energy so as to ensure efficient energy distribution and create a more sustainable environment.
Tony Agar also pointed towards the research conducted by the World Economic Forum (WEF) in order to highlight how digital technologies can help in minimizing global carbon emissions by about 15 percent. The shift towards IoT connectivity will not only provide EV charging companies such as Evnex with more incentives but also enhance their capability to serve more rural areas.
It is expected to increase the number of EVs on the roads while reducing the number of carbon emissions. It will also allow the companies to ensure greater cost savings and provide the end-users with greater control over how they are able to manage their household energy. They can keep track of their energy usage as well as cost with the help of mobile apps and accordingly manage their use.
