Malvertising is the term that is used to highlight this threat upon IoT Technology embedded within smart homes. There is very little conceptual idea of the potential of this new attack upon IoT Devices that are embedded within the smart home network. A criminal gang that has decided to intervene from Eastern Europe is attacking IoT devices, especially in the smart home. Hence, this bit of the research did force people to investigate the matter further.
People are not fully aware of how this threat is about to impact their IoT Devices. Earlier, there was a concern raised amidst the mind of people about the smart electricity meter being the victim of these attacks. But even with the limited information scattering in the air about malvertising, it was evident that the devices will get attacked only if a given ad is clicked over any website. But with further research, it has been proven that the modern malvertising attacks demand no clicks as well. Therefore, there is a risk to the smart energy meter and other IoT-connected smart devices as well. For instance, this attack can be upon the cameras, locks, entertainment devices, and other such smart home appliances as well.
Malvertising is the virus that spreads through the injection of any malware code within the display ads. This is done through the advertising networks, through the exposed user networks, and through the connected devices. Hence, the potential infection risk increases substantially. The advertising networks are not at fault, as they are not aware of being the platform for serving the malicious content. As per the reviews and revelations by GeoEdge, which is a mobile advertising cyber-security company, the users who are the prime target of attacks, do not even have to click the ads to get infected.
Hence, it is termed to be a dangerous and global-scale malvertising attack. It is known to be the first-ever cybercrime that has aimed at home-based IoT devices. The security research team is putting out an investigation for dealing with malvertising attacks imposed upon the smart IoT home devices. This quest of defending the IoT devices from cyber-attacks has begun in June 2021. As of now, there are pieces of evidence that these attacks are being carried out by people sitting in Ukraine and Slovenia.
As per the research conducted by GeoEdge, this attack upon IoT devices has the potential to manipulate the selected IoT smart devices and downloads certain apps in the device without the consent of the user. Hence, the risk of data thefts, personal information thefts, account detail thefts, and other such instances gets higher. Hence, to block such attacks. GeoEdge has proposed that antivirus or firewalls are not sufficient for high-end protection. Therefore, the company is trying to find out an effective remedy for the same. Antivirus and firewall demand to manually block each of those infected ads, which is possibly the pathway of this infection spread. There is a forecast of IoT devices to grow beyond 30 billion, and with such risks, the integrity of IoT will be a problem!
