Qualcomm brought up seven new processors embedded with IoT on Tuesday. This initiative of Qualcomm is to help several industries with enhanced performance, associated with 5G and Wi-Fi 6 connectivity. In some of the processors, AI acceleration has also been supported. Qualcomm is one of the biggest chipmakers across the globe, and they are putting up a remarkable boost upon IoT technology.
Qualcomm’s initiative is said to be impressive than the industrial IoT technologies. Qualcomm has named 18 different companies or device makers for incorporating the chipsets onto their devices. One of those companies is Honeywell, which is going to try out these chipsets on its devices, probably later in 2021 and 2022.
Qualcomm claims over 13,000 IoT customers! The devices under the development phase that are being adapted with new chips are destined to cross several verticals: retail, logistics, agriculture, energy, and buildings. For instance, an IoT device provider company, Hongtech in Taiwan, said that the premier Qualcomm processor, QCS8250, embedded with AI computing, will be integrated onto SMARC (Smart Mobility Architecture) module. It will be available by the first half of the year 2022.
The Qualcomm 8250 Chipset is also being proposed for use in next-gen AI-based retail visual experience platform, said by the company Videri. Another company named, Amtran will also use this premium chipset for fine-tuning the audio and video processing aspects for better video conferencing.
Nagaraju Naik. Senior Director, IoT Project Management, Qualcomm, puts light upon the fleet management functionality of the 8250 chipsets. He also says that it can allow AI to work collectively with cameras that can raise alerts if the driver is drowsy or using a mobile in a running vehicle. Not just that, but this chipset can raise alerts even if the driver takes his/her eyes off the road.
Qualcomm has listed their 8250 chipsets as one of the top-tier creations destined to offer greater power efficiency, embedded with AI and connectivity support of 5G and Wi-Fi 6. Moreover, it also works perfectly with the architecture of the Kryo 585 CPU of Qualcomm. Along with that, it also works well with the AI Engine to help run up to 7 cameras integrated with 120 FPS and 4K Resolution. This is a hexagon processor that has the potential to deliver AI performance of 15 TOPS.
Following that, the Qualcomm processors QCM6490 and QCS6490 consist of built-in 5G sub-6 or wave GHz, and they also support Wi-Fi 6E. It is proficient for robust smartphones or tablets, human-machine interface systems, industrial scanners, and others. Qualcomm has further made announcements for the launch of QCM4290 and QCS4290 processors, especially for cameras, security panels, and industrial hand-held devices.
The final two processors announced by Qualcomm are QCM2290 and QCS2290 that will be entry-level chipsets for affordable IoT systems, such as camera applications, tracking, point-of-sale devices. Qualcomm has not yet disclosed the pricing for these processors. However, leaving the final two, the rest five processors are available for companies to buy and integrate into their devices.
