The Japanese Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications recently revealed that 2 out of 3 cyber crimes in the year 2016 were focused on the Internet of Things (IoT) devices. This coupled with getting ready for Olympics 2020, led to the Japanese Government declaring a law for allowing Penetration Testing on the IoT devices of the citizens.
This will be a part of the survey conducted by the National Institute of Information and Communication Technology (NICT). With Japan’s Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications, the NICT would collect the list of the unsecured devices and systems and send these to the Internet Service Providers (ISP). The ISPs and authorities will then let the individuals realize the weaknesses that they would require taking care of. According to the IoT news, the NICT would conduct tests over near about 200 million IoT devices encompassing cameras, routers, and appliances.
Keeping the Olympic Games in mind, the governments have already tested the IT infrastructures before for mitigating chances of attacks. The cyber attackers aim at the Olympics because it’s a worldwide event which propels many countries. It is even a huge platform with many opportunities for the nation-state attackers for gaining valuable data and publicity. It even offers a very profitable benefit to the cybercrime groups.
According to the latest IoT news, this project would most expectantly begin in the next month. Japan is also making use of the other measures such as facial recognition for tackling the potential vulnerabilities that may become risks for the Olympics 2020 games. This law of the Japanese Government has been considered to be very crucial after some of the past national events.
