Leading telecom operator Vodafone recently stated that India must avoid the 5G spectrum auctions until 2020 because no specific use case for 5G is available as of now and 4G is adequate for most of the users and the Internet of Things (IoT) services.
Vishant Vora, the Chief Technology Officer of Vodafone, said, "The most appropriate time to hold auctions will be somewhere after 2020." Further, he explained, "We need time to develop India-specific use cases, and that takes time. We are working with our partners to develop them. The maturity of that (5G) technology will be there when it makes sense."
According to the latest IoT news, Vodafone has taken a stand to postpone the spectrum auctions and requested the government for fixing the condition of the telecom industry in the meantime. However, the government is confident enough about launching 5G in tandem with the world markets in the year 2020. Moreover, the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) would most expectantly conduct the next spectrum auction round after August.
Vora said, "We are the largest IoT solutions provider today, and we are doing it with 2G, 3G and 4G." Further, he added, "There's no need to do 5G for IoT in 95% of these use cases." Vora explained that 5G would be needed for selected use cases such as Virtual Reality (VR), remote surgery, or HD gaming as use cases like these need high throughput and lower latency. He asserted, "For these services, yes, you may need some spectrum, but they are still not the bulk of IoT services." According to the statements given by Vora, the majority of the globe would not go for the 5G services anytime before 2021-22.
