SmartThings, the IoT platform of Samsung, is a leading platform that facilitates controlling and connecting a number of devices easily and in less time. Optimized for watches and smartphones of Samsung, SmartThings allows users to control and monitor the home appliances and smart devices from anywhere at any time. It enables the users to group devices and effectively operates them simultaneously. SmartThings aims at making the lives of people safer, simpler, and more entertaining.
The IoT platform of Samsung is now all set to support edge computing. It focuses on improving home automation in the best possible way. Edge computing paves the way for local processing of a number of additional core functionalities. It is likely to enhance the level of comfort and convenience for the users through the execution of tasks much faster and with greater security and reliability.
In a recent blog post, the team of SmartThings of Samsung wrote that while the changes may not be visible to the users on the SmartThings app, on the backend, there is going to be a significant change. SmartThings Edge is expected to transform the experience of the users, and connectivity is a noticeable manner. The team added in the post that the advanced technology of SmartThings Edge would enhance the speed of automation significantly for the consumers. It will eliminate the necessity of cloud-based processing and directly bring all the vital information to the Hub. SmartThings Edge will not only stream different commands and events but also extend support for the local drive on a home network. It will allow the users to easily run the automation locally with much ease.
SmartThings is different from a number of proprietary hubs as it supports a wide range of standards such as Z-Wave, Zigbee, and LAN-based integrations. SmartThings is also likely to support the Matter protocol in the coming future.
The latest edge functionality of the SmartThings platform will demand a Hub 2.0 or 3.0 or other newer hubs that are being sold by Aeotec. All the SmartThings Hub’s previous generations demanded a wired Ethernet connection. However, v3.0 will support wireless connections. Samsung makes an effort to ensure continuous improvement of its IoT platform, SmartThings. In recent months, the company has made a number of notable announcements relating to its IoT platform. The two most significant announcements include the rolling out of SmartThings Energy and SmartThings Find. Both of them are meant for users completely immersed in the wider ecosystem of Samsung.
SmartThings Energy enables the users to track, monitor, and manage the energy usage of air conditioners and home appliances of Samsung. SmartThings Find allows the users to easily locate Galaxy devices such as Watch and Buds.
As a part of modernizing all its very core elements, Samsung is eventually moving away from the Groovy platform. Now, developers can easily build and code device drivers with the help of Lua. It offers the manufacturers of devices a simpler and robust means of integrating with Samsung’s IoT platform of SmartThings.
