Nowadays, IoT devices are in huge demand because of their smart features. With the increasing use of IoT rises the security concern. But according to the 2020 report by Palo Alto Networks, 98% of internet of things traffic data is unencrypted. This data informs about the risk associated with using IoT devices. In order to understand this problem, it is important to understand encryption is a long chain to secure loT, data, and our world.
IoT security needs a collection of device management services that include secure device commissioning, certificate management, a mechanism to give information over the air, and strong authorization and authentication capabilities. It means if 98% of data is unencrypted, most people don't get access to these services as well.
The advancement of technology has changed the world, and it has changed the way of collecting and acting upon data. It has given many opportunities to the people; however, people have ignored the security. In a data-centric world, security is secondary, with a hard-to-measure ROI, but IoT brings systematic, real, growing, and terrifying dangers.
The Mirai Botnet attack 2016 targeted CCTV cameras that nearly brought down the internet, and it was an attack by teenagers. The problem was that the code behind the attack was easily available on the internet. Avast recently admitted that the IoT threats would get worse, as the situation is not improving.
Current encryption methods are not advanced, and a device's data is only encrypted until it reaches in-network, and if the network is not safe, so is the data. In 2020 the UK, US, and Europe came up with IoT security regulations. These countries only focus on the basic guidelines.

Today there are many IoT solutions available in the market, and we don't have any idea about the code inside them, which can cause accidental problems like Ripple20. One of the biggest problems is that the enterprises lack the abilities, knowledge, and resources to face these challenges. Most of the time, it is the IT'S job to protect IoT from such threats.
But this won't be the case always, as with proper actions, the IoT can be secured from threats. The IoT adoption didn't meet the expectations because the market wasn't ready to use the advanced technology, but now the poor security and bad connectivity is changing.

The world is now adopting two telecom-centric connectivity solutions for many IoT solutions. NB-IoT is ideal to use for smart metering that requires sending a low amount of data, while LTE-M is a better solution for a large amount of data. The LPWA networks used by the telecoms offer many security benefits such as robust authentication, larger encryption keys, and enough bandwidth. Many IoT solutions will have a long lifespan.
The telecoms have contributed to a non-network, Lightweight M2M. It provides IoT solutions with an advanced framework to manage data, connectivity, and secure IoT solutions. Lightweight M2M also provides end-to-end security for IoT's security challenges. With the right approach and security, the world will get numerous benefits from IoT.
