Even though modern IoT devices are getting smarter, they are not safe from the cyberattack. Devices and machines having internet connection are not 100% secure. Hardware, connectivity and firmware protocol-based attack can be used to get access to into the devices.
ISE- Independent Security Evaluators, a research firm conducted a study in 2013. The study revealed 52 vulnerabilities in around 13 SOHO wireless routers from top vendors such as Linksys, TP-Link, Belkin and Asus. In the study, ISE stated that all most all the popular NAS products and routers have some types of security issues. They are not at all safe from attackers. It has proved that vendors are yet to introduce a powerful security feature in their IoT devices. The researchers further stated that millions of users have affected with the findings.
ISE exploited 12 NAS devices and routers to get remote access. They found vulnerabilities like cross-site scripting errors, buffer overflow issues, SQL injection issues, XSS request forgery, and security issues in command injection in the devices. As per the research firm, every device has some vulnerabilities which can be exploited for unauthorised access. Out of 13 NAS devices and routers, six devices were affected with remote exploit. This is really a serious matter that needs to be solved as soon as possible.
ISE, after finding the issues, contacted the IoT vendors. While some companies worked immediately to solve the problems, some have not responded yet to the report. The number of cyberattack cases is increasing every year. Even though experts have developed various tools to detect and fix the issues, they are still there in IoT devices. It has emerged as a big headache for IoT vendors. However, different companies are now working on various technologies to robust their IoT devices and keep them safe from cyberattacks.
