Do you have any idea while buying new gadgets if you are going to face any security problem from it? Well, to date, we cannot know that before using the gadget. Though most of us research about the particular gadget before making the final purchasing decision. For example, while buying a water heater, customers always check its energy efficiency and warranty. Every gadget’s energy efficiency can be understood from its star rating mentioned outside of the package.
Now, security ratings are considered to be mentioned outside of the IoT devices for better understanding of the customers. With those security instructions now, buyers can understand whether the charger that they are going to buy online can set their house on fire.
A private electronics safety organization named; Underwriters Laboratories is planning to fix these issues by introducing security ratings for Internet Of Things (IoT) devices. UL is famous for its safety standards certification, which will ensure the charger you are going to buy online will not set your house on fire.
UL also wishes to set the security standards to minimize cyber-security threats, a growing problem for IoT devices. For connected devices, there are no unified standards, which means nothing to ensure if the smart TV you are going to buy is a hacking setup that is waiting for you to plugin. Practically there is no way that ensures all your gadgets are safe from security threats.
Data security lawmakers have proposed legislation to improve the security of IoT devices. There are five-tier security standards named as:
Based on seven parameters, these starts will be given to the devices, the parameters are:
UL has already discussed the issue with some of the top IoT makers to install these standards in their devices. The discussion is accepted in various platforms; still, it is in it's early phase. For IoT, the change will not come overnight, though by the end of 2020, the security rating is expected to be installed in every IoT devices. Customers will consider the security rating more than energy efficiency and quality.
