The use of IoT devices has been increased rapidly in the past few years. From traffic signals to industrial plants, auto air-conditioner switch, smartphone, various wearable devices, i.e. smartwatch IoT is everywhere, ensuring smooth production and function of various industries. Instead of severe use of IoT technology, not all devices are compatible with others which is a serious drawback. This is because different wearable technology is used in different devices. Some run on Wi-Fi, whereas some require Bluetooth connection to run, depending on the requirement and type and application.
Sometimes it has seen most of the devices have equal radio frequencies. They also interfere with each other, which often delays the data transmission process. Not only can that sometimes due to the lagging time, but important data also be lost from the loop. It has many other drawbacks, among which increased energy consumption and decreased battery life is worth mentioning. Needless to mention the above reasons create increased maintenance cost that resulted in increased production cost.
In order to harness the above set of problems team of researchers at the Institute of Technical Informatics, TU Graz has come up with an advanced system which allows the exchange of data directly between devices. All these commercially available devices use the same radio frequencies but different radio technologies. Through the generic framework named, X-Burst companies will be able to integrate various IoT devices seamlessly.
Upon asking about the specific technique used in the designing of this new technology, they say they leverage the power of time-controlled energy pulses which is also called energy burst in the radio channels. Any smart device can detect and generate frequency. There is a receiver that monitors the energy level in the radio channel in order to detect the specific packets, finalize the communication duration and extract the information from the devices.
The team of researchers primarily concentrated on data exchange within the 2.4 license-free GHz band. Many radio standards use this frequency along with standard technologies like Wi-Fi, ZigBee, Bluetooth etc. They use a prototype to demonstrate the X-Burst model that uses various wireless technologies for successful communication between wireless devices. No expensive gateways are required to run the system.
There are a handful of benefits of the system that both the manufacturer and users will get. Some of these are:
At the International Conference, the paper titled ‘X – Burst: Enabling Multiplatform Cross – Technology Communication between Constrained IoT Devices’ has got the Best Paper Award. The live demo of the paper also got the best demo award.
This research was partly funded by the COMET Centre Pro2Future and carried out together with TU Darmstadt. The Austria Wirtschaftsservice Gesellschaft mbH (aws) also supported this research.
