Smart live cameras are an essential part of IoT Security and are a very vulnerable area for thieves to exploit. As per the records, there are cases of people carrying out video snooping practices on the connected cameras. Not just that, but people are watching the private cameras embedded with IoT and are doing other irrelevant activities with it.
And, these cases of compromise associated with connected cameras are being reported for a long time. But, now is the time to implement some action, as the intensity of these risks around smart connected cameras is now higher than before.
One of the most prominent ways using which the attackers are breaking into the cameras is by digital hacking. The attackers are breaking into the company profile digitally and retrieving the admin access to the main servers. From there on, they snoop the live feeds of the company or institute such as hospitals, offices, and schools.
If not that, then the digital video thieves are exploiting the connected cameras by leveraging the loopholes in their configurations. As the intensity of these problems is now increasing on a heavy tool, it is time for businesses to attain preventive measures to keep their company free from video attacks.
IoT Security breaches are helping thieves win over their motive of stealing & selling private videos obtained from connected cameras. As per the records, the number of stolen videos so far is in tens of thousands. The thieves sell it around the dark web for a good price. Under this type of IoT breach, the attackers prefer to break into the video storage section to seek exfiltration of the available content.
In other such recorded instances, the thieves are reportedly selling the credentials of live streams from select cameras at a specified price. Most of the videos referenced within this report are from China, but the attack is most likely to spread across the globe soon.
To prevent such video threats, organizations need to do an intense amount of research for the vendors offering such video products or services. They need to buy only from the trusted vendors who are equipped with efficient IoT security policies and features. Following that, the organizations need to use the security features over time for ensured protection.
It is better for the organizations to lock the access wherever possible. Following all the basic safety protocols is pretty much important for the entire team of employees and management. It is important for organizations to implement secure networking habits and use strong passwords embedded with multi-factor authentication.
Remote accessibility should be turned off whenever the camera systems are not in use. A camera that stays connected to the internet is at high risk. The manufacturer should put up frequent updates to the smart camera system to enhance IoT security aspects and make it difficult for thieves to hack in.
