By the year 2021, Gartner predicts that 25 billion Internet of Things devices will be connected all around the world. As far as the ways of hackers are concerned, then most of the Internet of Things devices might be easily taken control of. On the other hand, the hacker can make the IoT devices pay-per-click ad scams.
During the 2019 Security Analyst Summit, Threatpost had a sit down with Dan Demeter, one of the prominent security researcher who specializes in the Internet of Things. Dan Demeter is also a member of GReAT, extensive research & analysis in Kaspersky. Demeter has made some discussions regarding the ongoing trends as well as attack methods of the Internet of Things devices.
According to Demeter one of the most interesting trends is what the hackers around the world are doing with the Internet of Things devices and sensors. Some of the hackers even take over the significant Internet of Things devices such as light bulb and thermostat. And the next step is a little chaotic, and the hackers reprogram the IoT devices to "click" on the ads. By the looks of it, this is the only way by which the hackers will be able to drive revenue for themselves.
It doesn't matter if the device has a lower bandwidth or power. The only thing that the hackers need is a unique Internet Protocol address. With the IP the hackers can easily fool the advertising network by thinking that the device is real people.
For a couple of years now, the hackers are going after easy targets, mostly the devices that lack adequate security. And Demeter also pointed out that the attackers also prefer going after the devices in volume irrespective of quality. Even a small camera with a prolonged connection can prove out to be a massive benefit for the hackers.
