The world’s leading Research Company Gartner has defined the technology of “edge computing” as essential solutions which aid in data processing near or at the very source of the data generation. Edge computing is a highly critical technology that is needed for almost every business enterprise. Those who do not require it at present would soon plan to adopt it as it is a primary enabler of the Cloud-based applications, including the Internet of Things (IoT) applications.
Santhosh Rao, the Principal Research Analyst at Gartner, said, “Organizations that have embarked on a digital business journey have realized that a more decentralized approach is required to address digital business infrastructure requirements.” Further, he explained, “As the volume and velocity of data increases, so too does the inefficiency of streaming all this information to a cloud or data center for processing.”
With a well-developed edge computing idea in place, the organizations would be positioned for taking benefits of the IoT applications- encompassing those incorporating augmented reality and artificial intelligence- for providing significant business advantages.
Improving operational capability is yet another driver. AI equips the predictive maintenance application that lowers the maintenance cost and reduces failure risks. Retailers make use of RFID applications for managing inventory and reducing losses. Cities can make use of IoT applications for controlling signal lights and monitoring busy intersections.
According to the latest IoT news, the IoT applications are even driving revenue streams. Logistic firms have introduced new businesses around delivering real-time cargo status, including the climate controls. Healthcare providers are providing remote device analysis and monitoring services.
The possibilities for the IoT applications are endless. But many of them depend upon the technology of Edge Computing for delivering the required performance.
