When it comes to the security of the Internet of Things devices, it is a complete joke in the present-day. Moreover, this has been going on for a long time now. The researchers have also given up on trying to pointing out the weaknesses of the Internet of Things devices. A few manufacturers have sworn to improve the curation practices of the IoT devices.
A recent analysis was conducted with 22 different Internet of Things devices. The researchers found out that the manufacturers are not trying to make the security of the device better. Instead, they're making the devices obsolete.
A small non-profit lab, Cyber Independent Testing is responsible for conducting the study. The lab is famous for doing rigorous testing of the properties and features of properties and characteristics of several devices and platforms. The main goal of the team was to find out how the Internet of Things vendors is getting along while adding security to their conventional firmware binaries.
The lab did also curate a specific methodology came into being by downloading the firmware which is available from the distinctive vendor sites. The lab extracts the Linux-based system files directly from the firmware. In addition to this, CITL ran every single binary via its custom-made analytics tools.
The findings said that the dataset comprises over 3.3 million single binaries originating from 5,000 firmware updates that came from 22 vendors such as ASUS, Belkin, D0Link, Mikrotik, QNAP. According to the team of researchers, the results were quite disappointing, and they were not surprised by the outcome. The hardening of the Internet of Things firmware is getting worse every day.
The vendors are trying to remove the binary hardening while they conduct the firmware updates. CITL also said that for the last 15 years, there hadn't been an improvement in terms of security. According to sources, the team did also search for the significant number of hardening techniques to find flaws in IoT devices.
