The telecom infrastructure provider of the Government of India (Under the department of telecommunication) about to receive 6,000 Cr for its upcoming program in 2020-21 for extending its broadband connectivity to the rural areas.
BharatNet was founded in the 2012 by the Indian Department of Telecommunication to provide the latest technological infrastructure to all public sectors. Today the service provides 100 Mbit/s broadband connectivity to all 250,000 gram panchayats in the country. The initial idea was to cover 625,000 villages to strengthen the overall telecommunication of the country. The whole idea was to improve the campaign goal of ‘Digital India.’ In 2018 the government discounted the expensive BharatNet bandwidth almost 76% so that every citizen can afford wireless cellular 4G broadband deals.
The government is all set to build data center parks throughout the country to keep pace with new-age technologies like Artificial Intelligence, Augmented Reality, Internet of Things (IoT) etc. This policy was proposed by the Finance Minister of India Nirmala Sitharaman while presenting the 2020-21 Union Budget.
She said their vision is to provide uninterrupted digital connectivity to all public institutions like health and wellness sectors, government schools, PDS outlets, post offices, police stations, gram panchayats, etc. She further added, BharatNet will link about 100,000 gram panchayats with FTTH, for that Rs. 6000 crore will be allocated to BharatNet. She has also mentioned that AI, IoT, 3D printing, cloud, data storage and all other new-age technologies are redefining our world continuously.
