Amazon made an announcement in the year 2020, that the company has plans to enable IoT service, by name Amazon Sidewalk. This is a project that will offer wireless IoT service with over 900MHz & 2.4 GHz. This wireless service will be implemented to crowdsource data from other networks and power the IoT devices for scenarios such as poor signals or Wi-Fi outages.
The customers wish to avail a private, cost-efficient, and secure device that is easy to set up and manage. The press had some initial concerns about this plan for enabling Amazon Sidewalk with Ring and Echo devices by default. This concern was put up for the sake of privacy and security concerns.
Amazon Sidewalk has a focus on driving more connectivity to every person. Amazon has assured, that this new IoT service will simplify the hassle of setting up a new device and will also extend the range of Bluetooth devices that have low bandwidth. Moreover, Amazon Sidewalk can also help in keeping the devices online, even when they are not in the range of the network.
As per Amazon, Sidewalk is not just a service to look for lost items. Locating any of the lost valuables is one of the major use cases, but it can also offer diagnostics for power tools and appliances. Amazon has the vision to use Sidewalk for enhancing the reliability aspects of smart home devices, leak sensors, and intelligent lighting.
Not just that, but Amazon is also increasing the supported devices with Sidewalk, which includes smart locks, CareBand wearables, and Title tags. Amazon is now putting up its immense focus upon addressing the privacy and security risks. With the increased feature efficiency of Amazon Sidewalk, the security risk concerns are also higher. But, Amazon has implemented its security strategy onto Sidewalk to give ease of mind to people who are concerned about their data being stolen.
Amazon Sidewalk consists of 3 encryption layers for keeping the IoT devices secure. The three of those layers include the flex message layer, network layer, and application layer. The presence of these layers indicates that the bridge and endpoint are checked before the bridge can be used. Moreover, the customers who are utilizing the wireless services of other customers, do not get control over their devices or data.
The encryption rules are implemented onto all the third-party applications that are utilizing the IoT wireless service. To add one more positive element to the strong point of Sidewalk’s security, it clears out all of the routing information used for network component operation, at the end of every day. Amazon removes all of the data within the network from its end. Sidewalk has the intention to ensure that no critical data of customers should sit idle over the storage, for hackers to gain access to it.
Amazon Sidewalk has implemented major security facilities that make it quite convenient and effective for people to implement.
